well it's official. i'm taking a hiatus from new york city. starting today, i have a new job working for the miami dolphins. so i made the move and am subletting a place until i find a more permanent residence.

i've thought about retiring this blog, but can't think of a proper name. but maybe i won't pigeon hole myself into a blog name because of my location. i've secured a blog with "mynameisclaudia" as part of the address. although i guess that totally blows my cover here since i've been posting as "redacted". damn.

1. You are at least ten times prettier than you think you are.
That holds true no matter how pretty you already think you are! Don’t believe me? Ask your mother/auntie/grannie if she thought she was pretty when she was twenty. She’ll say no. Then find a photo of her at that age. See what I mean?

2. The only thing you should be faking is confidence.
If you don’t have it yet, pretend you do. In every new situation, pretend you’re not nervous, pretend you’re not afraid. After a few times doing this, the pretend part disappears.

3. Want to try something new like painting, skiing, running your own business? Go to the library and borrow ten different books on the subject.
Skim through them all, find the ones that have the most vital information and study them. Then see number 2.

4. No matter how old you get, remember what it was like to be a nine-year old girl.
Remember the feeling of freedom. If you’ve already forgotten, do a cartwheel. You can so still do one. Savior that feeling. Wake up with it every day. You’ll stay young until the day you die.

5. In the same vein, cut or potted flowers are never a waste of money.
Because every time we glance at them, they remind us how much beauty there can be in the world.

6. Speaking of money, starting right this moment, whether you’re twenty or sixty, you can change your finances around.

so the subletter is really nice, but she lacks major common sense and manners sometimes. i clean, buy supplies for the apt, etc. well, i've taken it upon myself to let the toilet paper run out and not buy more to see if she'll do it on her own. meanwhile, i've got a stash all of my own in my room. mean? passive aggressive? yes and yes. but it's day one and we'll see what happens when i get home.

so one of my friends invited me to go with her to the today show on friday to see new kids on the block perform. yes, i'm a fan. i was a huge fan when i was a kid and i went to madison square garden last fall to see them. now don't get me wrong, i do love them, but i don't LOOOOOVE them. like one lady had donnie wahlberg's signature tattooed to her wrist AND a heart with "NKOTB" on her arm. umm, no thanks.

anyway, i had to get up at 5:30am, which sucked. but when i got there at 6am, i was still half asleep. but after we got our passes for the VIP section i started to wake up a little more. then the group came out and rehearsed a few songs and then performed a few live on the show. all in all, totally worth getting up early for...especially since i'm unemployed.

while i was in boston, i stopped by the niketown and bought myself a new pair of running shoes. it was long overdue and i was actually pretty excited about it. but later that day when my friend and i worked out in her parent's basement, my feet were sort of uncomfortable. as a matter of fact, after only running a mile and a half on the treadmill, i was semi-regretting spending the money.

the last few weeks i've been wearing my old running shoes and the new ones have been sitting pretty in the box:

i actually really thought they were comfortable when i tried them on. and i love the colors. but good news! i bought new ones. yay! and although i had full intention on just getting a refund and going to the runner's store at the time warner center, the niketown staff in manhattan were extremely helpful. and even though i felt way better about the recommendation they made to me, they made me even happier when they said i could keep returning the shoes until "i find the right one". awesome! so behold, my new shoes. i have a month to break them in before the corporate challenge in june.

the celeb streak continues

so as you may have read, i spotted a few "celebs" this week (does brett ratner count as a celeb? he makes millions, so i'm gonna say yes). anywho, i went to see a former co-worker's comedy show tonight at ochi's and guess who walked in to do a surprise set? none other than comedian jim gaffigan.

now, he's been in a few shows/movies, as well as a few comedy central specials (which i love). but, i will say that i currently love him in "my boys" on tbs. i've blogged about it before, but i really do love that show. it's completely underrated.

so he took a seat right behind me and when i was going up to the bar to get a drink, i turned around and said, "hey, i'm a big fan of your stand up and i love 'my boys'". he seemed completely unfazed and said "thanks". i mean, i don't expect much, but that's it? don't i get bonus points for even knowing that "my boys" is a show? and that i WATCH IT?

maybe he had a long day. maybe he didn't care. or maybe he didn't have much to say other than "thanks". nonetheless, i'm still a fan. and you should totally watch "my boys".

so earlier today i decided to trek over to the movie theater in union square to take in a late afternoon showing of wolverine. the movie itself was good. nothing fantastic, but entertaining nonetheless. silver linings? hugh jackman and taylor kitsch.

so after the movie, i trodded outside and i saw a guy on his phone in front of me that looked like brett ratner. this seems to be a growing trend, the whole recognizing people from behind. last weekend jesse palmer, yesterday jude law (even though my friend saw him, but i only saw him from behind), and now brett ratner.

as i was walking right past him, i notice he gets off the phone and gets into a black SUV. any doubts that i had this was him were quickly erased. so me in all my dumb glory (with iPod headphones on mind you) said "hey, i'm a huge fan!". he turned around, waved, and smiled.

and thus, my brush with fame was over. WTF? not that i could've done much more. but you always hear stories about people who just take chances when they run into hollywood "power players" and tell them to give them a chance. i need to grow a pair and do that next time. until then, i'll have to polish off that non-existent screenplay and tv pilot.

and brett, if you set up a google alert for yourself...HI! call me and we'll have dinner. your treat.

the family puppy, continued

a week or two ago i posted a few pictures of the puppy that my dad, stepmom, and sister are getting (half-sister if you want to get technical, hence why she's so much younger than me).

anyway, dad sent a photo update, which means new photos of rocky and the family! i think rocky's only 5 weeks old, so it's still gonna be a few weeks before my family can take him home. but in the meantime, lots of cute puppy photos to come!

apparently it costs $54,000 a year to go to NYU now, which is beyond absurd to me. if and when i ever have kids, they are most definitely going to a state school, nay, community college unless there is some type of education reform.

The NYU "financial counselors" are calling up the applicants who got accepted but have large gaps between their family's income and their financial aid packages, and just making sure they understand that they are poor—probably too poor, for NYU. Those who were the first in their families to attend college also were likelier to get a call.

my trip to topshop nyc was exactly what i expected

so i finally decided to drop into topshop in soho to see what the fuss was about. granted, i'd seen a few of the clothes on various blogs and websites. but this also gave me a sense of how expensive the clothes were gonna be, so i didn't expect it to be very recession friendly. and let me tell you something friends, it wasn't.

one of the first things i saw when i walked into the store (located on the corner of broadway and broome) were these atrocious leggings:

how much would you guess these suckers are? $20? $25? nope. $40. FORTY DOLLARS PEOPLE. this crap looks like something you'd see at the bargain bin of your local discount retailer. moving on.

this adorable peach floral number? adorable. and although $50 isn't thaaaaaaaat terrible, i feel like i could find this at a used clothing store for like, HALF.

then these sunglasses. super cute, right? what if i told you they were THIRTY dollars! yeah, i could buy the same pair at forever21 for like $5. lame-o.

what about this little eyelet number? adorbs, right? i think this one cost around $80 or $90 bucks. which makes me sad, cause it's JUST A COTTON EYELET DRESS. it's not made of cashmere or imported silk.

then comes this really pretty dress with a sheer layer over it and beautiful bead work. and this is from the "kate moss" collection there. so between the intricate beadwork and the name attached to it, it jacked the price up to like $200 dollars. NO THANKS.

bottom line...WHATEVER. i'll give it another whirl once the new fall line comes in. but i am not willing to go spend my hard earned money/unemployment checks here. for now, i'll keep going to h&m/forever 21/urban outfitters instead.

so i was perusing google trends and i saw that number 4 was "turtle bay resort". and it peaked two hours ago. which was when "the hills" was airing a new episode on MTV (yes, i watched. don't judge). let's not get off topic here. enough a-holes who watch "the hills" actually went online and searched "turtle bay resort". it kinda pisses me off that this reality show has enough power to determine what's trending on google. and even more mad that people didn't recognize this hotel resort from forgetting sarah marshall. that movie is epic. way better than "the hills" will ever be.

i'm sure you're familiar with pandora, the internet radio station that customizes radio stations for you based on your favorite artists. we may have discovered the secret to listening to the best hits of the 80s (hall & oates, wham!, michael jackson, and many others included). if you make a wham! radio station, good things will happen to your ears. i promise.

can you, or should you, be friends with your ex?

To cut or not to cut an ex from your life after a breakup, that is the question...It can be tempting to remain close to the person whose life was so intertwined with yours, but jumping into a friendship with an ex muddles those often very confusing emotions following a breakup...I'm not saying one can never be friends with an ex. Depending on how serious the relationship was to begin with, or how easy the breakup was, it's possible to immediately and seamlessly move into a friendship.

Additionally, even serious relationships that end with a lot of emotional fanfare can eventually create enough distance to be close again. I've never experienced the latter myself, but then, I never really saw the point in rekindling a friendship with anyone who valued a day of golf over everything else. Perspective is usually a better friend than any ex can be.

i can definitely relate to this article and have pondered this idea many times before. definitely an interesting perpective.

among the many things i've been obsessing over lately is the flip video mino hd.

i'm OBSESSED! i stopped by best buy on broadway to check it out and it's AWESOME. it's super lightweight and tiny and amazing. it runs around $209 or so. but it holds 4GB, which translates to about an hour of video and the battery lasts about 2 hours. kind of amazing. i need it. i NEEEEED IIIIITTTTTT!!!!!!

as you know, i'm a die hard yankees fan. in fact, my stadium tour of yankee stadium (the old one...RIP), was probably one of the top 10 moments of my life. and it saddens me so that i couldn't go to opening day today. but being that i don't have a disposable income to pay scalpers and brokers an absurd amount of money, i couldn't afford game tickets to opening day of the inaugural season. but fear not! i am going THE DAY AFTER opening day (i.e. prices plummet).

so tomorrow at 1:05pm, i will be in the bronx sitting in the outfield with beer and hotdogs in hand. not to mention that tomorrow is "magnetic schedule day" (my 3rd season in a row getting one). honestly, i'll probably be there around noon to get my drink on at stan's or one of the other many bars across the street. and this joy of a day only cost me $27 for each ticket! although once you tack on the beer and snacks, it's closer to $80.

i turned on the faucet of the bathroom sink and this is what came out:

yes folks, that's BROWN water. so of course first thing that comes to mind is shit. i hear the super in the hallway, so i put my shoes on and march on downstairs. he said the water was shut off and it'll be brown for a bit cause it was turned off, but it's back on now.

it might be back on, but i can't brush my teeth with SHIT WATER! is this what paying $1063 a month for a bedroom in the east village gets you? oh it is? then i guess i'll shut up now.

yesterday was a big day folks...I CHOPPED MY HAIR OFF!!! well, that's a slight exaggeration. it's not like my hair was so long that i could sit on it or so long that when they cut it i had enough to donate to someone less fortunate. more like, although i love my hair long, i hate the time it takes to make it look nice. and with summer approaching (eventually), i didn't even want to fathom having long hair in 100 degree weather.

and no, before you say anything, my hair ISN'T blue. i think it's just a combination of the way the sun is hitting my hair and that bright blue shirt i'm wearing. all in all, i'm in love with it. if you're in the need of a good hair stylist, head over to the maria mok salon in the east village and ask for jessica. she was AMAZING.

breaking news! my dad, stepmom, and sister are getting a puppy. right now, the lab is only 3 weeks old and they have decided they're gonna name him rocky. yeah, sorta kinda generic, but my sister named him and she's 7. it could've been worse. she could've named him something like "jonas brothers", "zac efron" or "hannah montana".

the season 3 finale of "friday night lights" was EPIC. as a fan, i thought i might want the series to end since half of the kids were graduating and moving on. however, after watching the finale, i take it back. i CANNOT WAIT for seasons 4 and 5. yesss.

you can watch seasons 1 and 2 on hulu. and the most recent season 3 eps are on hulu, but it will be out on dvd in a month.

Where has the tomboy gone? She's still around, she just no longer needs that label -- or its dress code. Nor does she need marketing-driven pressure to start worrying whether she's pretty and stylish at ever earlier ages...

this makes me kinda sad. now don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with being a girly girl. in fact, i consider myself somewhere between tomboy and girly girl. i love sports and football and beer and "hanging with the guys". but i also love dressing up and wearing makeup and looking pretty.

my sister is actually a good example of the mentioned article. she is far from a tomboy. she loves pink and purple and dresses and cheerleading (yes, she's a cheerleader at age 7). at that age my two best friends were named ricky and seth and we hung out during recess on the playground. we couldn't be any more different. and that's fine. just kinda weird to think of the "tomboy" as a dying breed. then again, we didn't have hannah montana when i was a kid.

Men rated a woman shown in photographs as more sexually attractive if she was wearing red clothing or if she was shown in an image framed by a red border rather than some other color, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

apartment, sweet apartment

so i'm back in new york city. took the bolt bus back last night from boston (and this time, the wifi was working). it was a nice long weekend in new england. my friend's family was very welcoming and made me feel right at home. in fact, take a look at my guestroom:

it was like a bed and breakfast. in fact, i asked my friend's parents if they could adopt me (28 isn't too old to adopt someone, right?). although the weather was cold and/or rainy all weekend, we did manage to walk around newbury and boylston street. walked through boston common. did some window shopping. grabbed a few beers. did some thrift shopping in cambridge (and picked up a few skirts at garment district...check it out if you're ever in the area). and of course, a nice hour at church and tons of yummy food throughout the weekend topped off with an easter basket of treats on sunday.

but now, it's back to reality and back to the job search.

yummy easter treats

i ventured over to jacques torres on hudson street to buy some easter treats for my friend's parents since they are nice enough to have me over for the weekend.

i went to buy some of the chocolate covered peeps, but they were sold out. then i looked for the carrot shaped bag filled with chocolate covered cheerios, but, sold out. i did, however, find chocolate covered cheerios in plain packaging along with some other chocolate covered delights (and a chocolate chip cookie for myself).

Oops! Obama's press office has an e-mail snafu

The White House Press Office accidentally e-mailed a draft version of President Obama's Thursday schedule on Wednesday night that included the back-and-forth between White House staffers.

The e-mail, sent on a daily basis to inform the media of the next day's events, at first appeared to be like any other press schedule. But at the bottom of the e-mail, there was a series of exchanges from the press team, as well as a draft of the schedule.

The first section of the schedule noted that in the morning, Obama planned to talk with homeowners who have refinanced their homes and benefited from lower mortgage payments.

One staffer, recommending changes to that line, wrote to "put more emphasis on the real people aspect of this."

The draft version said Obama will talk "with his economic team," and also attending the meeting "will be a handful of households." The final version took the emphasis off the economic team and said "Attending the meeting will be a handful of homeowners ... as well as members of President Obama's economic team."

The draft schedule also showed the president hosting Seder to celebrate Passover. The dinner was marked "closed press," meaning no reporters allowed.

One staffer asked, "Can we remove the dinner at the end of the day?"

"chuck": one of TV's many underrated shows

one of my friends and i have very similar tastes in tv. we both love "30 rock", "how i met your mother", and "the office". we also have our differences. he has no idea why i enjoy "friday night lights" and "chuck" so much. well, for all the "chuck" naysayers (and apparently there are a lot of them since the show is on the verge of cancellation) i say watch this week's episode.

it has gives a quick background of things you need to know at the beginning of the episode. aaaaand, scott bakula and chevy chase guest star! the show has been on nearly two years and it brought me to TEARS. please watch it. it's fantastic. help save this wonderful show so that i can have a season 3 to watch in the fall.

confession: i've been to pinkberry twice (is that too much or too little?)

fact: 16 handles is just as good (if not better) and cheaper.

i went to the 16 handles on 2nd avenue in the east village for an afternoon treat. and man, did it deliver. you pay by weight and just get to put your own toppings on. just like that! although, i never stray too far from tradititional flavors, so i got the traditional with fruity pebbles topping. now that i know i love it, i'll be a little more adventurous next time.
