CON EDISON CONTINUES TO URGE CUSTOMERS IN NORTHWEST QUEENS AREA
TO REDUCE THEIR USE OF ELECTRICITY
NEW YORK – While Con Edison crews
worked through the night to stabilize the electric grid in Northwest Queens, the
company continues to urge all customers in the Long Island City, Sunnyside,
Woodside, Hunters Point and Astoria neighborhoods of Queens to discontinue their
use of non-essential electrical appliances and equipment until problems on
electrical cables can be resolved. The utility is experiencing
difficulties in this area and customer cooperation will help ensure
uninterrupted electric service.
The affected area is bounded by the East River on the west and north,
the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on the east and Newtown Creek on the
south. Company crews continue to rectify the problem. Con Edison has
asked customers in the affected areas not to use appliances such as washers,
dryers, air conditioners and other energy-intensive equipment and to turn off
lights and televisions when not needed until the feeder cable problems are
resolved.
The cable problems in the northwest Queens have no effect on the rest
of the Con Edison system. Con Edison will provide updates to affected
customers both directly and through the media as the situation warrants.
The company is in constant communication with the New York City Office of
Emergency Management.
