is it even possible for gray's papaya to lower their prices?

i took this photo on the UWS recently. i didn't think it was possible for them to make a hot dog and beverage combo any cheaper, but apparently their "recession special" takes another dollar off. that's gotta make it $3 bucks, tops.

if my dad read this blog, he would tell me to go. when he helped me move to nyc in '98, we ate there. he since has periodically asked me if i've gone back to gray's papaya. the answer is always no. i don't think i've eaten there since college. i have happy memories of going there with my dad. i don't want it to be ruined by the taste of a nasty papaya dog.

tom colicchio is a-ok in my book

last night i went to dinner at craftbar in nyc. it's more "casual dining" than colicchio's signature restaurant, craft. but judging from the food i had last night, i'd never be able to tell.

we had the mushroom bruschetta for an appetizer followed by our entrees (me: bucatini, manila clams, red mustard greens. him: skate wing, fingerling potatoes, sauce gribiche). and for dessert, we split a warm apple cake.

i can't honestly complain about one thing. the food was delicious. the service was fantastic. and the ambiance was pleasant. if there weren't so many restaurants to visit in nyc, i'd go back in a heartbeat. i highly recommend it.

happy mardi gras!

2/24/2009 05:26:00 PM / Posted by [redacted] / comments (0)

i wanted so badly to find a king cake to bring into the office today. i only thought it would be appropriate considering today is mardi gras. but alas, after visiting 3 bakeries and calling a 4th, my search was a massive FAIL.

today, my former colleague cory filled me in on one more place that i should look. but as much as i appreciate the tip, the day is nearly over. oh well, there's always next year.

and if you have no idea what king cake is, see the photo on the left (and yes, that is a plastic baby on top of it). normally the plastic baby is baked inside. whoever finds it is "king or queen for a day" and it is considered good luck.

"what is it with girls and cupcakes?" (or something like that)

12/15/2008 11:26:00 PM / Posted by [redacted] / comments (0)

while on the phone with a friend of mine the other day, i excitedly told him that i found the new cupcake place that had opened up in our neighborhood (said friend and i live in the same 'hood). he asked me "what is it with girls and cupcakes" (not verbatim, but you get the idea). i'm not sure what my reply was,  and i'm not sure there's a scientific answer, but i love 'em. on a sidenote, if the government wants to give me money to study this, i'd be happy to, as long as they pay for my gym membership too, cause i'll need it after eating so many cupcakes!

anyhow, the name of this new and fancy neighborhood cupcakery is called butter lane. although it's gotten mostly positive reviews from yelpers, i wanted to try the place for myself. with that said, i sorta inadvertently made my roommate the guinea pig as i decided to buy her half a dozen cupcakes for her birthday. being that we've had somewhat opposite schedules lately, i left them for her in our kitchen with a bouquet of tulips and a birthday card. and being that they were now officially HER cupcakes for HER birthday, i felt wrong eating one before she did. so low and behold how happy i was when i was finally able to taste one today.

yuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmmyyyyyyy.

they have the perfect balance of delicious, but not so sweet that you'll have to make a dentist appointment the next day. i think i finally know what perfection tastes like.
